Good Monday all-
Today is going to be rather unfortunate, as although temps will be in the high 50s, rain will be developing through the afternoon and ultimately it will be pouring by a bit later tonight. Fortunately, the heaviest of our 0.5-1" of rain will fall overnight tonight...and temps will not be miserably cold until the weekend after an even heavier rainstorm on Friday, which could feature as much as 2" of rain in parts of New England. Ordinarily, the path of this storm in December would yield a tremendous snowstorm, but the cold air just isn't there this time. In any event, the weekend looks cold and possibly snowy at times, though no accumulation will occur (just flakes in the air) before another rainstorm a week from now sets up the warm temps again and Xmas looks to be rather green this year.
Keep in mind, however, that last year there was a total of 3" of snow until January 24 in Boston, which then recorded their all-time snowiest winter in the next 1.5 months. That just goes to show, winter is never over till it's over!
Today in weather history- December 14, 2010- In a truly bizarre event, an EF2 tornado strikes...Oregon. Severe damage occurred, but fortunately nobody was injured or killed, a terrific accomplishment in a place not used to tornadoes by any stretch of the imagination.
Also, please take time today to remember those lost 3 years ago in Newtown.
